Are phthalates dangerous?
Phthalates are used to add softness to plastics. Many recent scientific reports refer to the health implications of specific phthalates. Dibutyl Phthalate DBP and Diisononyl Phthalate are commonly used in nail polish formulations and the manufacture of PVC, respectively. In view of Oriflame Cosmetics ethical stance on health and environment, and concern for the consumer, a decision has been made to phase out Dibutyl Phthalate from future developments (January 2004 products).
PVC has been phased-out of Non-Cosmetic Accessories from January 03 launch products, and all products from June 03 onwards will not contain PVC. Furthermore, Oriflame Cosmetics is phasing out all uses of PVC in the manufacturing process, and is committed to being 100% PVC-FREE by December 2004.
Di-ethyl Phthalate (DEP) is an approved denaturant for alcohol in many countries, and is used in a number of Oriflame perfumes. Scientific reports have not linked Di-ethyl Phthalate to any serious health or environmental implications and its use will continue.
